My grandfather is back at his place, as of two o'clock today. He called just before six, and it was nice to see his familiar number on the caller ID. He sounded good, and seems to be doing well, though today was the first time he'd worn his prosthesis for any decent length of time and he said his left foot was hurting him. Here's the thing: He hasn't had a left foot in two and a half months. We're guessing that wearing the prosthesis for so long is aggravating whatever nerve went down to that point and that's why he's having phantom pain.
He liked what my mother and grandmother had done to the place last week, cleaning and moving things around, and organizing things in an approved manner, apparently. He plans on putting in a second railing on the back stairs and keeping a walker on both the lower landing, for when he goes outside, and the upper one, for when he goes in. Well, whatever works--but are you doing all this yourself? My uncle is spending the night with him so maybe he'll be the one to tackle that in the morning.
I'm glad he's doing well. He's been looking forward to this day probably since he re-entered the hospital back at the beginning of August. We don't know about what sort of support services he's supposed to be getting, but for right now I'm just glad he's got someone with him, at least for tonight. And I know he's happy.
