An update on Crankypants, AKA my dad.
He's been super pissy the last couple days, barely speaking to mom and me after I told him about the neighbors and the arborists. This morning, I asked him, can you at least tell me why you're so upset? He had a few reasons, with one of them being that mom and I were siding with the neighbors, rather than him. I didn't say this--maybe mom did--but we're not siding with them; we're recognizing the law. If our property is infringing on theirs, they have a right to take matters into their own hands. The other issue is that the husband came over and told dad the trimming was going to happen, as opposed to asking if it was okay. I had a feeling that was part of it.
Both of my parents have had a number of medical appointments lately, and dad had one this morning, so he left before I left for work. When I got home, his car was gone. Um...has he been gone the entire day?! No, mom said; he had prescriptions to pick up at the CVS inside our Target, but it turned out he had to wait around for them so he was wandering the store for a while. When he walked in the door, he was pretty much normal. Oh...kay...not questioning it. But eventually he did mention that he was being a dick (his word) and I was like, THANK YOU.
So. My dad. Went to the doctor. For like the first time in approximately my entire life. Mom made the appointment and it was a couple weeks ago now. Turns out my dad, who's been claiming that he feels fine and therefore is fine, actually isn't entirely fine. No surprise to us, but my sugar fiend father has type 2 diabetes. The doctor sent him home with a sheet today of what not to eat; it's basically a listing of his entire diet, no exaggeration. I was laughing as mom went down the list, because seriously, he eats ALL of it: White pasta. Butter. Baked goods. Bacon. Candy. Soda. Just every single thing listed, it's not recommended for him. Now, we had a preliminary diagnosis when we went shopping on Saturday, so we knew we should probably avoid certain things, but it was nice to get a definitive list. Also, cheese. Pretty sure cheese is his first love. I mean, I get it, but I've been eating a lot less cheese this year so I know it's possible. (Given how he, er, reacts to dairy products, we kind of suspect he's in the lactose intolerant club.) Oh, and cream. He recently switched from a flavored creamer to plain cream due to possible intestinal issues and has felt better since that. I would imagine the flavored stuff had a bunch of sugar in it, too.
His numbers overall are pretty good. I think he had bloodwork done twice. The two numbers to be concerned about are his A1C and his glucose; his glucose is about three times the normal range, yikes. But he lives on sugar. Candy. Ice cream. The bargain baked goods section at Walmart. Yeah, sorry dad, you'll have to satisfy your sweet tooth in another way. Jelly is another no-no, and he puts that in his oatmeal, so he'll have to find something else to add in that's healthier. He's on a couple of meds which he just picked up today, including Jardiance. Dad was joking about dancing around now. That's one of the commercials we see a lot, and it's been running through my head as of late. Little did he know it was targeted advertising to him!
My mother's had her own issues. She had a mammogram recently and there was something unusual, so she's had some follow-up appointments and been on edge recently, more so than normal. The good news is that her biopsies turned up negative for malignancies, phew, but she has a mass in one of her breasts that is concerning enough that she has an appointment to see a surgeon...tomorrow, I think. Mom is hoping it's a wait-and-see deal, rather than a we're-taking-it-out-now thing. She does not want to have surgery, and I don't blame her. It's deep enough in there, and/or she has dense enough tissue, that it's not something she noticed, and for one of her follow-up appointments they'd had to put some sort of little clip inside the area to be able to find it while doing imaging, I think it was. Kind of wild. I'm just relieved that she's okay, at least for now. And I'm glad dad is starting to take care of himself. He does have other appointments coming up and I hope those also go well.
