My dad has been growing lots of produce this summer, including a bunch of lettuce behind the shed. I've been making salads every weekend and it's been great. This past weekend at the grocery store, I bought more stuff to make salads, including goat cheese and fruit for a fancier salad, and parmesan for a Caesar salad since we already have croutons and dressing. I forget when I was back there, but it might have been Friday or Saturday morning while putting something in the compost bin; I have to walk past the lettuce to get there. There was a ton of lettuce, which was part of my inspiration.
Imagine my surprise to go back there Saturday evening and discover, wow, a lot of the lettuce is gone. Now, we'd had a storm come through in the afternoon, so a number of the leaves had bent and were on the dirt, but it still seemed pretty denuded. Eventually, I would see why--we had not only a chipmunk, but a little bunny back there. Dad has chicken wire on three sides, with the back of the shed forming the fourth wall, but there's a gap and a place between the shed and the wooden box he'd built for the smaller guys to get in. And they did.
Monday was way too hot and humid for him to go out there, but he said on Tuesday he'd modified things. When I went out yesterday, I saw some blocks of wood stuck back there. Yes, I'm sure that's going to help. Well, we may have to start buying romaine again, which is sad. Unless it starts growing out again; that would be nice. The stalks are pretty stubby at the moment.
