I kept joking that I had a hot date on Friday night with Avery; it's more that it was in the 90s all week, including when we met up. We went to our usual hangout, Chinese Kitchen.
Back when everything went down with Dr. K, I reached out to Avery to let her know the chaos that was occurring at our alma mater, not to mention she was there as I was puzzling over where he was during the championship game back in December. She appreciated the update but was also stunned, naturally. She also asked about getting together at some point but I was about to get into the crazy busy time at work. I finally reached out to her earlier this week to see if Friday would work. She was able to do dinner but had to leave by 7:15 as she and her boyfriend had tickets to a show nearby.
I started off with the 911 call and learned that her job requires her to re-up her safety certification for CPR and such every two years, and she'd done that recently. Some things aren't applicable to her situation--she doesn't have to worry about a jellyfish sting in the middle of a ballet class--but honestly, it's good information to have and it made me realize the last time I had CPR certification was back in college. She mentioned having to watch videos online so I wonder if they're available to anyone or only those taking the class.
I did go into more of what happened with Dr. K, and he even mentioned this week that the president of the school has been placed on leave. He didn't go into details, and it's possible he doesn't have them, but he mentioned she's been scrubbed from the website. Hmm. Given how she terrorized certain faculty members, it appears that the board of trustees finally realized she's bad news and it's time to cut their losses. Avery was not surprised to hear of that turn of events. I also discussed what happened with band immediately before Dr. K's announcement that he was leaving; I went, did I mention Carnegie Hall? ...No, you did not! She said. So I got to go into that as well.
A rarity for us, we ordered right away; since she was going out, and it was so hot outside, she opted only to get an appetizer and not a full meal since she didn't want to deal with leftovers. This confused our waitress, though, who seemed to think Avery wanted to order later. No, really, that's all she wants to eat. Well, that and the order of egg rolls we split. I tried the beef chow fun with mixed vegetables; chow fun means Cantonese flat rice noodles. I'm really digging noodles with these dishes. My dinner was so large that I got lunch and dinner out of it, plus mom had some of my leftovers, so Avery made the right choice in only getting an appetizer.
She got picked up by her boyfriend, which is still unusual but fun to say. She'd asked if he could join us but there was so much to go over that I wanted to talk with her alone. Next time, though, perhaps the three of us could hang out. I waved at him when I came out of the restaurant and he eagerly waved back. I'm glad that they are still going strong and enjoying each other's company despite the generational difference. I'm sure it keeps things interesting.
