Tonight might be tough. Not only did we not rehearse last week thanks to the weather, we lost the Director Emeritus two days later. When he retired last summer, the last thing we thought was that he'd be gone before the end of January. We've since gotten several emails about the situation, and our rehearsal tonight will be truncated a bit so that we can have time to talk about things and share stories and such, and we also were told that we'd be adding a piece to our next concert, the march that was commissioned for when DE celebrated 50 years leading the band. I've actually had that running through my head recently, so it will be nice to play it.
DE's services will be Friday and Saturday. I'm not sure I'm up for the full memorial on Saturday; we'll see about that. The visitation of sorts, when I realized where it was, it gave me pause--it's at the church where he taught us, the three NCC alums that currently play in the band. It's close to both the band building and school, but he's not a member, so I'm curious how that came about. Still, just being in that building for the first time in 24 years may bring about unexpected emotions. It may be a long week.
