The phone at work rang the other day, and the Caller ID showed the number to be my boss' mom. Uh-oh. He's not in, and she should know that, but she's out of town indefinitely and possibly forgot? I answered, and she was all excited--you're just who I wanted to talk to! ...Oh? Turns out it was related to her mail. She has everything sent to the business since she does do a fair amount of traveling. However, being in her 80s, she has gotten onto every possible mailing list that could solicit someone for money. It's pretty incredible. It's reminiscent of what Papa would get, minus the dirty old man materials. She gave me a list of a half-dozen mailings she wanted to get, mostly from banks, totally obvious items, and said I could get rid of the rest.
It didn't take long to put that into action. The next day, yesterday, she got a bunch of mail and the entirety of it was junk she did not request. Finally, now that I have carte blanche to go through her mail, I can try to get her off these lists. Her son, my boss, has vetted her mail when he's here, but he's not around often, and I haven't felt like I could do so. He just tosses everything in the trash. That doesn't help solve the issue. Many of these mailings have "no postage necessary" return envelopes, so what the heck--I'm returning the little coupons and writing "please remove from mailing list" on them. It's worth a shot and costs no money. There are four of them to get picked up by the mailman today. It's tiring to get all this crap at work. Some days, we'll get a pile of mail and it's all for her and almost all of it is solicitations. It's just a waste, and an elderly person on a fixed income does not need to be asked to give all her money away. I'm more than happy to help.
