3/21 Contact Football

I had to go to the bank yesterday, so we drove past the high school on our way there before going grocery shopping. Imagine our surprise to see fans in the stands and football being played.
Football.
On a Saturday.
In March.
First day of spring.

There are some schools that play Saturday football; my high school isn't one of them. Dad guessed correctly; it must've been a JV game, as when I looked online after getting home, the varsity had played--and won--on Friday night. Still, what a novelty to see a fall sport being played on the first day of spring. As a marching band member, it would've been nice to go from cold to warm during the season and not the other way around, though I'm not sure the football team would feel the same way. This is all due to the pandemic; things were too iffy to allow football in Illinois last fall. It got moved to spring, with a truncated schedule of 6 games, not 9, and no playoffs. What would normally be a spring sport now got moved to a special summer season, I believe. At least they're finally getting to play.

It was relatively nice out yesterday, in the 50s; today it was in the 60s. We cracked open some windows and doors to let in fresh air for the first time in a while. The guy behind us put all his furniture out on his deck, then hung out for a bit. We found out yesterday that his neighbor to the north got a puppy. Dad knows that guy and asked, since I'd seen a dog in their yard; the guy was like, I figured you'd put your house up for sale as soon as you found out! Hey, we like dogs; we just dislike the dogs that bark their fool heads off. So long as this guy trains his dog, we're fine.

It's just nice to know we're on the upswing. I love spring. I love that, as I'm typing this, it's still light outside at about 7 PM. I love knowing that soon I can sit outside and read the paper and get a little sun. Maybe I can talk my family into coming out to the arboretum; it's been a long time since I was last there. Funny how I renewed our membership for two years and barely used it since. Oh, the wildflowers. I missed the wildflowers two years ago, because spring was so soggy the place had flooded. And last year wasn't happening. This year, I'm working later than I have been, so I don't know when or if I'll get the chance to go. Sigh.
