Easter without the bunny?

A couple weeks ago, we'd had a rabbit keeping an eye on our front lawn. Unbeknownst to me, there was a rabbit den in the middle of the grass. Well, I discovered when I came home from work one day that the sentinel rabbit and one of the babies were no longer with us. There must have been more babies, though, as soon after I discovered another rabbit keeping an eye on things from the area in front of the bushes.

The baby's body and a bunch of fur had been around the bare patch in the lawn that day; the next morning, I looked outside and it was clear. Something had cleaned it up. It had been raining that previous night--drizzling when I'd gotten home--but it didn't seem like the rain maybe tamped down the fur; it was gone. And the baby was gone, too. That white tummy was completely visible from up above, looking out from my room. All I could see was grass.

However, it wasn't long before fur appeared on the front lawn again...and we haven't seen the second sentinel rabbit since. Oh, dear. Now I really felt bad about wishing the rabbits unwell. That's not like me, actually. I love the bunnies and enjoy having them around, but for some reason at that time, I didn't care for them.

Fast-forward a few days. I look out onto the backyard now, and there appears to be a bare patch there...and there's fur around that. Are you kidding? We lost a *third* yard rabbit? What are we, Old Country Buffet for the local hawks? I'd noticed it while having breakfast, and a little later that morning dad looked outside while getting coffee and said, there's a rabbit there! I said something like, yeah, and it's no more. He said, no, really, there's a rabbit. I peeked out the kitchen window and sure enough, there's a rabbit in the bare patch, sitting there.

That was a week ago Tuesday and I haven't seen any rabbits since. I'm not sure there's any left at this point, really; maybe they're all hiding in someone else's yard. With the new fence, it's harder for them to come and go, though there are definitely little tunnels dug underneath the gates on either side of the house, much to my father's chagrin. I will say, we pretty much always see a rabbit in the yard on Easter. Will we see one this Sunday?
