Here, kitty, kitty

My high school is doing the musical Cats this fall. When mom found out, she really really wanted to see it. She's never seen it and tried to get my dad or me to attend with her. Sorry, I've never had an interest. (When you've taken a class on musicals and your big project is to fix a problem musical, and it's an Andrew Lloyd Webber show--Aspects of Love--you really don't have an urge to see other ALW shows.)

Mom hemmed and hawed and finally bought a ticket online the other day. The paper had an article on the show last week and people were urged to get tickets early as they'd likely sell out. This turned out to be true: When mom checked on Friday, exactly one ticket was available for that night's show, and the seat was terrible; Saturday had a handful but very few. This also caused mom to fear what parking would be like and got my dad to drive her. We figured the show, which started at 7:30, would get out between 9:30 and 10. This is a danger zone, since my dad falls asleep pretty early. She'd asked if she should call his cell phone when she was ready to be picked up; dad and I both told her, separately, to call the house phone. This way whoever was awake would hear it. Well, neither of us was fully awake, but I was closer, so I answered and ultimately picked her up as dad was so sound asleep by that time that he didn't wake up even as I shook his leg (the nearest appendage to where I was) or after we got home, when we were not very quiet.

Mom had said she would walk to the corner of Wilson and Western so we wouldn't have to enter the parking lot; she was trying to avoid that altogether. That's where I found her. Of course, this is in traffic, so I was concerned I'd be blocking other cars. Luckily that was not the case, and I think the other cars at the intersection saw what was going on and weren't bothered, phew. Since we passed the townhouse subdivision on the way home, I asked mom if she wanted to go down the street to see if we could see where the fire was; it was too dark to see anything and nothing appeared boarded up. Oh well.

Once in the house, I was taking off my coat and shoes by the front closet, where I keep my stuff, and mom had gone into the family room and laundry room, where she keeps her stuff. The only light on was from the eating area of the kitchen. On the floor was something red and maybe feathery…what is that? Was she wearing some sort of fancy scarf or something and a chunk of it fell off? What the heck? And then I soon realized what it was. A critter had found one of the old tomatoes on the side of the house and, after eating part of it, deposited it on our front walkway. My mother, who doesn't watch where she walks, stepped on it and brought it into the house. So now she had to grab her boot and wash that off, and wipe off the spot she'd left after leaving behind the tomato, and I got to pick up the tomato itself. All this is happening with my father just feet away on the family room couch, face down, completely oblivious. He was OUT.

I guess this morning he felt bad, but hey, mom didn't have to walk home in the cold, so that was good. And besides, I had a feeling this would happen, which is why I hadn't changed into my PJs. It all worked out.
