Changing mom's plans

Oct 14, 2017 13:24

My mom was supposed to go out to Morton Arboretum today with the Red Hats. However, the weather forecast was not accommodating, and they instead went to the casino, I believe in Elgin. I realized a few days ago that things would not be conducive to their original outing, and at about 4 this morning, that clearly was the case. (I'm guessing it was 4. I was awake for what felt like quite a while, thought to look at my watch, and it was only just becoming 5. Ugh. And at 6-something, the power went out for about a second and a half thanks to a lightning strike--just long enough to make us reset our clocks.) It's been raining ever since, fairly hard at times, training over us. We have our large puddles in our yard, which we haven't seen in a while. We don't miss them. It would be nice if this rain would get spread out. We go weeks with nothing, had several days in a row with it last week, and now today we've already gotten several inches. Just, come on, moderate.

Meanwhile, when the phone rang at 8:45 last night, we thought perhaps it was one of her friends calling about the change in plans, since they'd only just changed yesterday. No; it was this guy named Jerry. Mom had mentioned his name when I got home (as in, guess who called me today! Like I was supposed to know who it was); she has a real estate license, which she doesn't use but keeps renewing when it comes up, and it's through this guy. I want to say several months ago she got a notice that her license had expired or close to it, and there was some dealings with that, and as far as I knew it was squared away. Because of what all transpired, she'd thought he'd passed away. So, well, good that he's still alive, and I guess he left her a message yesterday morning at 10:30. So…why was he calling at 8:45 PM? He left a message that he wanted to get in touch with her, and that he was having to close up shop due to age and health reasons, and what have you. I'm not sure why he left the second message since he'd already called. And then, inexplicably, not even ten minutes later, he called again! And left a nearly-identical message! …So, perhaps dementia or Alzheimer's could be in play? It was really bizarre. Dad was like, if he calls a third time tonight, I'm answering the phone. Thankfully he didn't, and mom made sure to call before she left this morning. The whole thing was really weird. But at least it's done.
