Vacation, day 2: I brake for oil changes (and brakes)

Mar 07, 2017 19:46

Today was the day I had to get up about my normal time. One of my goals was to take my car in, and I made sure to get an early appointment in case it took several hours. Not only did I need my oil changed, but I wanted the brakes done. I knew they were low the last time I was in, and lately I could feel that they needed a change, and I was hoping to get all of them done, front and back. I keep getting told I don't have to worry about the back ones, but it's a 13-year-old car. I'm gonna get concerned about some things.

My appointment was at 9, and I was there basically on time. I mentioned doing both sets of brakes to the guy who initially helped me, and he said, we'll do the multi-point inspection on it first and come see you. Sure enough, the front brakes were down to a 2 for the one and a 1 for the other. Yeah…not surprised. I was at a 3 for the back, but again was told I had drum brakes and it wasn't a big deal. Well, okay, but explain to me why. The person I saw at that point was my official adviser, a woman, and she said that you could get down basically to 0 on drum brakes, so I still had a long way to go. Okay. Thank you. (Later, when talking to dad, he said on my car the front brakes do much of the braking, so that was part of it.) She recommended replacing the air and cabin filters, which were dirty, so okay, that's cool…and then mentioned that my battery wasn't holding a full charge. I'd realized it's been probably seven years since I had a new battery, so that was in the back of my mind anyway, so what the heck, since I'm here. It was a fair amount of work but I was expecting that. Even with all of that, I was done by 11:30 and home before noon. Sweet.

I purposely came prepared to kill time. I think I mentioned I have camp stuff to do, so I spent the entire time writing up entries in my camp journal. I was most of the way through Saturday's entry, having gotten to the point where the counselors went out on the town, so I finished that up, then started on Sunday (which was finished after I got home). I have found another reason to be thankful I have a smartphone, because I was able to pull up my camp pictures to help remind me of certain things, like when we went go-karting, who was in what groups. I took a video of the second group and mostly knew who those people were, and only two of our people were in the third group, but I had no clue who went first. Thankfully my pictures could tell me. Also, I discovered Sunday morning that the nurse's cabin was rearranged, and I took plenty of pictures to help describe that. Super awesome that I was able to pull those up.

Once home, I had lunch, got in some time on the Wii Fit, then set about finishing up that Sunday entry. I last wrote in there in October, so I'm long past due in getting that done. But that's just how busy my fall gets, and it slips my mind. I also had a few ideas for camp as well, so I made sure to jot notes for myself.

Tomorrow will be busy enough that once I leave, I may not come home until late. It's going to be an interesting day, but I'll explain more in the morning (or at least that's the plan).
