Or, it's my mother's birthday month! Who wants to come along for the ride?
The Red Hat ladies do birthday celebrations roughly every month, so since it's mom's birthday month, she is one of the planners this time around. They've decided to do Dave & Buster's. Oh, should be fun. They won't go until the end of the month, so mom asked if I would meet her there one night because she wants to do it before the group goes. She's done this before. Whatever. If you'll feel "prepared" for this by going ahead of time, what the heck. We'll likely go sometime next week.
The other thing is that she was the one to send out the invitation to the other ladies. Since her computer is a little barebones netbook, she asked for my help. I suppose. She's telling me all this stuff she wants in the invite and I went, why don't you send me an email with what you want in it? Frankly, she could easily have sent that out and been done, but again, whatever. I created a text document with what she'd written; she wanted parts of the text in red and parts in purple, since those are the society's colors. She also wanted a fun font, but not *too* fun, since it had to be read by the ladies and many are older. She wanted things lined up just so; okay, fine. Then she wanted a map. Well, here's the thing--it will never be big enough to show what she wanted to show, and it certainly wouldn't fit on one page with the rest of the invite because it would be too tiny for anyone. Okay, perhaps then we should just put in directions. But then that was an issue. I don't care for abbreviations, so I was writing out things like street, avenue, and boulevard. She was honestly getting upset about it--put B-L-V-D! That's what the street sign would say! Mom, you keep saying you have a bunch of teachers in this group; I think they could figure it out. You asked me to help, therefore I'm doing it my way. You could be doing this yourself. Meanwhile, she's peering over my head at this--I was sitting in the computer room chair, which rocks and swivels, and she would rest her hands on the chair back and look at what I was doing. However, she'd end up pushing down on the chair as she did this, and I'd jolt backward. Thanks. This happened a couple of times, at least once while I was typing. Do you mind? Also, in typing up directions, I mentioned that it's been easy to get lost going there--unless you know where you're going, you can easily drive past the entrance, because by the time you see the sign you're past the driveway. I asked if she wanted me to put a note in the directions about looking for the right-hand turn lane, as it's the only one in the area. She said no. No, really, mom, I don't want you to have to listen to your old lady friends complaining that they shot past it and had to turn around. She still declined. Okay, then, but you've been warned. It'll be interesting to see what happens when she goes there next week, if she has the same problem Laura and I did the first few times we went.
Finally, it was good enough. She'd said something about doing it as a PDF, which I thought was a good idea since I have Open Office, not Word, and I didn't know how compatible it might be. Luckily it's really easy to save something as a PDF, so I did and sent it off to her. I then said to send it back to me as practice for sending an attachment, which she didn't know how to do. That worked fine. There are three other ladies with birthdays, including one April person, so she sent it off to them to see what they thought. I haven't heard anything so hopefully it'll be fine and can just go out. Especially since she was driving me nuts about it.
