Surprise Tuesday (or, who has insulin?)

Who likes a surprise? Today, we got two good, one...to be determined.

My aunt emailed me for Valentine's Day, and she let me know she was sending coffee to my dad, but don't mention it to him. It came today. She included something for me and mom, but as it's still coffee, that means mom. Dad likes this hazelnut cappuccino he had at my aunt's house, only he can't find it here; this is now the second coffee care package my aunt has sent out. He told me, don't encourage this. Hey, what's wrong with your sister sending you something? It's nice.

The package arrived around the time I got home, and also around that time my mom called. You may remember she'd stopped at a local bakery last week hoping for paczki, failed, and came home with other baked goods. Well, she really must've wanted paczki, because she called on her break to say, hey, if I get paczki, what would you like? She ended up having me read off the list, conveniently on a flier she'd brought home last week, and I said I'd take anything except for the chocolate but I'd prefer cherry or apricot. She said she'd try to bring some home, if there were any left, and she probably wouldn't bring home more than six. She brought home eight. Holy crap, mom. Dad took the box from her when she came in and exclaimed about the weight. Yeah, these are serious paczki. We definitely did not need eight of them especially considering I can't eat them past midnight. And, we'd gotten a box from the grocery store and I had mine from that box for lunch, so I really didn't need more than one. But that's my mom; when she can't decide, she gets everything. So she got three cherry and one each of anything that was left. Nice. Dad and I each had one and said, we're done. Mom, however, started cutting into several of them and eating halves. Okay. Well, let us know when you need to go to urgent care for an insulin injection. And she wonders why she's fat.

Meanwhile, I had my own surprise today that did not involve food. Since we had the concert on Sunday, we did not have band last night. However, that's when the board meets. And, apparently I was made one of two new band librarians. I got contacted by the director himself today, who said I was appointed. I...didn't know this was an issue, nor that I was in consideration for this position. He said, you expressed interest in this at one point, didn't you? Uh...not that I recall. I mean, maybe, in passing, perhaps, but it's mainly been the current librarian--who, mind you, is in his upper 70s at this point--who has been pushing me to take his place. Like...okay, this is totally in my wheelhouse, and at least I'd have a partner, but still. It's a time-consuming thing. And while I am one of the people who gets to band way early, part of it's so that I can practice. I don't know. Well, whatever. The director wants to get together with me, the other candidate, and possibly the assistant director to go over things. He thinks the current librarian considers the library his and his alone and he is very possessive of it. We're talking like Gollum and my precious. So, um, does that make me Frodo? Actually, probably Samwise, since I think Sam was the younger of the two. It's been a while since I read Tolkien.
