This could be subtitled "The bane of our existence."
When we were at the store the other day, I had a taste for swiss almond cheese spread. I was introduced to it a number of years ago by a coworker, who said it might sound weird, but give it a try. I did, and I liked it. It's best when it's left to sit out for a while, so it softens and is more easily spreadable. I haven't had it for a while but was thinking of it around the holidays, so what the heck. I could only find the 16 oz. tub, though, nothing smaller. I soon came to regret that, because, being lactose intolerant, that much soft cheese isn't the greatest thing ever. Oh well. At least I satisfied my craving and I won't have to have it again for a while. To use it up, I've been eating cheese and crackers for lunch every day.
Meanwhile, I think my dad came home while I was having some, and I offered it up to him, and he wasn't interested. Turns out cheese gives him issues, too. Mom and I have wondered about that for a while, but he was very into eating cheese and didn't appear to want to give it up. However, he then said to me, didn't you notice I haven't bought cheese curds in a long time? Actually, no, since I didn't tend to eat them; they were flavored and seemed kind of dry to me, so they weren't my thing unless he bought the plain ones. But now that I think about it, yeah, it's been a long time. Well, welcome to the club. We have Lactaid.
Mom has been making her own discoveries. She'd gone out and bought herself a couple of mini hand sanitizer bottles--"the flavored kind," she said--and during a slow period at work she took off the label to look at the ingredients. She was shocked to discover there was lactose in the sanitizer. I think she's refusing to use it now. While I agree that is an unusual place for it, I'd probably still use it, then never buy it again. Then again, I hate hand sanitizer and wouldn't have bought it in the first place, but that's me. She's convinced it'll have the same effect on her as regular food lactose since she's "putting it in my body." Um, you're eating it? That's not how you use hand sanitizer. It goes *on* your body. I mean, if anything, try an experiment to see how you are on a day you don't use it and compare it to a day you do use it. Her concern is that she works in a small room with several other people and, um, there might be consequences to her using it, same as what might happen should she have cheese or ice cream. Well, you could always invest in a can of Lysol or other air freshener if you're that concerned, you know. Whatever. But there is now a forlorn bottle of peach blossom Purell on the kitchen counter, likely never to be used.
