We *thought* we'd have a quiet evening at home. Then mom pulled out the wine.
So, mom and I both had to work today, but she got out early, and I stayed a bit longer because, with our shortened schedule, it didn't make sense for someone to come in for an hour and I covered that time. I ended up pulling into the driveway just seconds after mom. I'd have beat her if I hadn't stopped for $1.95 gas. No, seriously, I got about a half-tank for under $20. I can't tell you the last time I paid that little for gas. Anyway.
The plan, since Christmas, was to order Chinese and play Apples to Apples. The Chinese part went well, and mom was impressed that I used my chopsticks to eat everything but the egg roll. However, my father--the person who seemed to most want to play the game again--balked at it. What? Come on. You really enjoyed yourself last time. There was a concern about only having three players, but I solved that by having each of us put down two cards at a time instead of just one, so that we'd have more choices to pick from. It worked pretty well. We also upped the amount of cards to hold in one's hand from five to six.
Things went swimmingly until my mom went to put down one card for me to judge; the other three were already waiting. She moved her hand wildly and knocked into my father's tall, nearly full cup of coffee, dumping it all over him. We were so stunned we just kind of sat there for a moment until he went, uh, I can't move; could you please get some paper towels? I ended up mopping up the floor with the paper towels while mom went and got him a fresh set of clothes. The wet ones immediately went into the wash. After probably 10 minutes, we resumed the game.
So, the wine. Several weeks back, mom had gone to her Red Hat Christmas party, where they did a wine exchange. Mom's not much of a drinker but still participated and got this bottle of something that the giver really liked, and it sounded all fruity, so for a few days mom's wanted to taste it. Not long after we got home she got my dad to open it, she took a sip...and didn't really care for it. However, we still joked that that was enough to get her wild. No more wine for you. Dad ended up having some but he can hold his liquor better, so nothing else has spilled so far.
Three and a half more hours to go over here. Hope everyone is having as eventful of a New Year's as they want. Mine...uh, was just a bit more than expected, but I've had worse.
