In a fit of...retail altruism, I suppose...I volunteered to work Harry Potter Saturday.
I don't think you understand. I haven't worked on a Saturday since college.
My boss, however, assured me that I would not be needed, that I would be able to work the following Sunday as per normal and that would be it.
Then I checked the schedule.
I am working from 9-4:30.
Gah.
Granted, part of me wants to be there. The first couple of books came without fanfare. I'm not sure about HP3, either. It was only with HP4 and 5 that people began getting fanatical about it, that stores opened at midnight and transformed streets and strip malls into Diagon Alley (hello, Oak Park). I have never experienced this level of craziness. I plan on bringing a camera. And every one of my coworkers will be there, and today A. figured out that there will be a two-hour window in the afternoon where all of us will be there. Unheard of. I haven't seen one of my coworkers in months, because she only works Friday nights. Anyway, I am both looking forward to it and dreading it, wishing it would be over and wondering what we will do once it ends.
By the way, I have never read more than the first chapter of the first book. We were actually required to read it way back in '99. I think I can hold out until #7 finally makes its way to publication. My grandmother has all of the books, and I am getting her a copy of #6. All but one of my coworkers, and numerous former coworkers, have at least one copy on reserve.
