I am a real newbie to laptops as I have had a desktop for all of college. How long does the battery last under normal use for both options? Also, what are you ( Read more... )

My dad's got a Dell laptop. I can't really comment on the battery life, because he always has it plugged in. If there's anything else you want to know, I'd be glad to ask him.

Watching movies with the DVD player, I get about 2:30 on my MBP. It lasted pretty much an entire day out on sleep.

I have the low-end model, 1.83GHz, with a 1GB RAM upgrade and the 100GB 7200 RPM harddrive. I might recommend the RAM upgrade, because OSX on its own seems to take up quite a lot, but I wouldn't buy it directly from Apple, because apparently you can get much better deals elsewhere.

And of course, though I'm sure it doesn't help a pragmatic decision based on performance and cost, OS X is smooth as silk and such a better experience than Windows XP ;) For the most part.

We recently bought a new Dell laptop, and I like it. I understand quite well the usability and aesthetic premium in the Macbook, but I spent significantly less for equivalent (more or less) hardware and software (I include MS Office). The trick with Dells are to search the internet for current coupon codes. If you can't find a good deal, you can wait a while and likely find one later. Apples are always priced the same.

The downside to a Dell is it comes loaded with trash software and some fucked up settings.

The battery (splurge on the bigger one) is nice, I can watch an entire movie in bed and it won't run out entirely. I hear with laptop batteries, for any laptop, you can fully cycle the battery about 300 times before it goes to hell. That's prolly why rizen's dad (and me) keep em plugged in whenever humanly possible.
