Mac or Dell?

I am looking at getting either a Mac Book Pro or a Dell laptop as a graduation gift from my parents. I just wanted to get feedback from anyone about experiences with either type of laptop. I am a real newbie to laptops as I have had a desktop for all of college. How long does the battery last under normal use for both options? Also, what are you experiences and opinions about both?

Any help you could give me, I would appreciate!
