"...and when we found them, it was only to discover the whole thing was for not. The Keirpan Twins were in the house the whole... Sophia, what are you doing with that..." Rose was silenced by the slap of a rolled up Sunday Miami Herald across her forehead. Her eyes crossed and she fell back in her chair.

"Sophia!" Climbing to her feet, Blanche pushed the old woman aside roughly so she could get at Rose. She tapped her friend's face a couple times to try and bring her around. "Rose, can you hear me?"

"Mommy?" Eyes unfocusing, Rose frowned. "Mom, you look terrible."

"I'll call the ambulance!" Rushing over to the kitchen phone, Dorothy dragged Sophia behind her in a crushing grip.

Blanche shook her head. "No, darlin, it's Blanche."

"Blanche? Boy am I glad, for a minute there, I thought you were my mother." Shaking her head slightly, she slipped back until Blanche caught her. "Blanche. You look terrible, have you gained weight?" She was dizzy again as Blanche nearly dropped her.

Entering the hospital room, Blanche tentatively reached out to touch Rose's hand. "Are you awake, honey?"

"Yes, Blanche, I have regained consciousness, though I feel my faculties remain addled." Touching the bump on her forehead, Rose blinked to clear the spots from her confusion. "They do not believe it to be more serious than a mild concussion. Judging by the symptoms, I am inclined to agree."

Blanche's jaw dropped.

Patting Blanche's hand, Rose smiled at her. "Do not worry yourself, Blanche, my convalescence shall only last a few days." It seemed impossible to her, but Blanche's mouth opened wider. "Please close your orifice, dear, you might attract insects."

"I don't understand it. This shouldn't be possible, but Rose is a genius!" Whispering to Dorothy, Blanche made sure they were alone in the kitchen. They were making a care package to send to Sophia at the halfway house where she was ordered to spend the next three months. "She's so smart, even you will have a hard time understanding her."

"Blanche, please." Dorothy shook her head and closed the box. "Get the tape off the shelf, the scotch tape. They inspect all packages before giving them to the people in the home."

Blanche paused. "It's a halfway house, Dorothy."

"What did I say?" That was curious, she could have sworn she said halfway house.

"You said the home." Entering the kitchen, Rose walked over to the fridge and pulled out an apple. "I think your mind was sublimating your desire to place Sophia in one once more. It's a common occurrence." Washing it off under the sink, she smiled. "I like apples, they always seem so happy to be eaten. Apples are brain food, you know. People in ancient times believed they contained forbidden knowledge."

"Yes, I know." Smiling, Dorothy giggled to herself. "What about apples?"

"Oh, nothing." Rose sighed. Things were different since Sophia had hit her then was arrested. The joy she took out of the simple things before were boring to her now.

Glancing at her watch as she handed the tape to Dorothy, Blanche frowned. "Damn it, I'm going to be late for my date with Donald! I'm sorry, Dorothy, but you'll have to visit Sophia on your own. Toodleloo." Reaching in to her purse, she pulled out her cellphone, pressed the speed dial and put it to her ear. "Howdy, Donald!"

Rose and Dorothy watched her go, both of them with disappointed looks.

"From the emphasis she places on her amorous liaisons, one could believe she peddled her physical wares and business was good." On the other hand, she could still enjoy some things. Eating her apple, Rose pushed the kitchen door open and walked back in to the living room.

Dorothy could say something about that, she really could, but it just wasn't worth the effort. After all, Rose had said it all. Perhaps Blanche was right about her being smarter after all. Oh well. Feeling giddy, Dorothy picked up the shoe box. She had to visit her mother in the home.... halfway house.
