sheltered life, the nurses of the house held a dark secret about the child
among themselves. When young Georgina finally comes to a suitable
age for courting, the nurses are anything but nervous. With a secret

PART I
The hushed voices among the servants of the Paxton household echoed quietly in the halls, as they discussed the newest addition to the small family.
"She is in no mental or moral state to have this burden placed upon her shoulders just yet" Agatha, the head nurse of the household, whispered. The group glanced down to the crying baby, who was being wiped clean by one of the other nurses.
"How do we tell her?" Ginny, the nurses aid, questioned.
"We won't" Agatha snapped.
"Oh, I wish sir George was here, he would know how to handle this."
"I do too Ginny, but sadly, he isn't with us anymore, and we have to do this ourselves, for the baby's sake" Agatha sighed. "Quick, hand me the frock, and dress the baby appropriately." Ginny slid the light pink frock onto the now sleeping newborn and put a pair of knickers on it. "Okay, now be careful, don't let her ask to many questions, and tell her what she wants to hear.Give me the baby" Ginny handed Agatha the baby and followed her into the mistresses bedroom.
"Madame," Agatha whispered as she approached the bed where the lady of the house was now laying. She stirred in her sleep and finally opened her hazel eyes. She glanced around in the darkness, letting her eyes adjust to the lack of light in the room.
"What is it Agatha?" She snarled angrily.
"I'm sorry Madame,I thought you may want to see your new child-"
"Is it a girl?" Agatha hesitated a bit before answering
"Yes Madame, 'tis a girl"
"Good, name her as you please, but raise her well, I want a presentable and absolutely charming daughter." Lady Paxton said. "Now let me sleep, for childbirth is exhausting."
"Of course Madame," Agatha mumbled, before curtsying and exiting. Ginny did the same and followed her out of the room and back to the nursery.
"What a wretched lady, not even wanting to look at her own flesh and blood!" Ginny huffed.
"Hush up Ginny, do not speak of such things, Madame Paxton hired us-"
"yes, to do her motherly duties for her! That woman does not deserve a child as beautiful as this"
"Ginny, quit while you're ahead, I understand what you're saying, but we have a bigger task on our hands; naming this baby" Agatha sighed, as she placed the baby into a cradle that had been specially made for the privileged baby. "I say we name it Georgina Louise Paxton, after its father," Ginny nodded in agreement.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful....girl" She said quietly, as she reached down and stroked the baby's little head.
"get used to it Ginny," Agatha said quietly. She turned to the baby and sighed "though your life may seem privileged, you, my child, carry the weight of the world on your weak little shoulders, and I'd hate to see a day in which you bear it alone; but unfortunately, the day will come." She leaned down and pecked the baby on the forehead. "But now is not the time, now is the time for sleep"
PART II
5 years later
Agatha sat with Georgina up in the study, teaching her the rules of writing in script.
"I can't do it, mama" She whined, dropping her pencil onto the desk and burying her face in her hands.
"You will learn sweetie, don't give up, Paxton girls have to be knowledgeable-"
"Poised, and elegant, I know mama, but this is difficult" Georgina looked up into Agatha's tired face and sighed. "I'm sorry mama, but can we please move onto something less difficult?"
"You'll have to learn it sometime," Agatha reasoned.
"I know" The door to the study slowly creaked open and Lady Paxton stepped inside. Georgina stood up and curtsied to her mother.
"Hello mother," She said politely.
"What are you learning today?" Her mother asked, walking up to the small desk and chalkboard that they had set up for her lessons.
"Georgina's learning script today, madame" Agatha said happily, as the lady looked over the papers.
"Did you write this, Georgina?" She asked, holding the papers up to her child's face.
"Yes.." was the shaky reply. It was greeted by a sharp rap on the face.
"This is horrible! Complete and utter disgrace! No daughter of mine will write like this....chickenscratch! I want you to sit here and do it over, do it until it's legible!" Lady Paxton screamed, ripping the papers in two and throwing them up in the air. She punched her daughter in the arm once more before storming out of the room. Georgina fell to her knees, her skirt flowering out around her, like a pool of silk. She sobbed quietly into her forearms. Agatha walked over and kneeled down by her.
"Hush child, experiences like this only make us stronger." She said and pulled the child into a hug.
"Agatha, why aren't I like other children?" she asked, wiping her tears on her sleeves.
"you are like other children,"
"Why don't I have friends? Why don't I go to school? Why can't I ever go into town with you and Ginny to get food?" she cried. Agatha picked her face up by the chin and looked deep into her hazel eyes.
"Listen Georgina, you're not like normal children because you're special. You're my shining star, you're my world, little girl, you really are. One day when you're older, I promise you, I will take you with us into town. But now is not the time to worry about that. Now is the time to write your script and make your mother happy"
"a-"
"Shush, do as your told, You needn't get brazen"
10 years later.
"Ginny? Agatha?" Georgina called as she wandered through the house. "GINNY AGATH- oomph" she was tackled to the floor by Ginny herself.
"Hush up, child, you'll wake your mother!" She whispered harshly, getting up carefully and helping Georgina up with her.
"Child? I'm no child. Compared to you, I'm a peer"
"No, I fear you are mistaken, I am almost half your age, and though I might act as a peer to you, I still have the authority to do this" She said, pinching Georgina's ear playfully.
"Ow, that wasn't very mature of you." Georgina whined.
"Yeah, yeah, now come on, Agatha wants to take you to the town today!"
"The TOWN!"
"Shh, yes, the town, but you have to be quiet about it, I know the mistress is bed-ridden and all, but she'd have our heads if she found out that you were gallivanting all over town." Ginny scolded. "Now, come on let's get dressed."
"oww! not so tight!" Georgina whined, as Ginny tightened the corset around her waist. She responded by pulling on the lace strings harder and received a sharp gasp from Georgina.
"Stop whining Georgina, all good girls have to go through this, you wouldn't want to be a hussy now would you?" Ginny teased, as she buttoned up Georgina's top for her.
"Gin, why don't I have a full chest like you?" Georgina asked quietly. Ginny sighed.
"You'll grow eventually, if you ate once in a while, I think that would help too"
"I do eat! I don't know why I remain so skinny though" Georgina huffed, pulling on her jacket. Ginny laughed quietly to herself.
"Ready to go?" she asked. Georgina nodded and followed Ginny out to the carriages out the back door of her mansion. Agatha met them both out there with a warm smile.
"Georgina, this is your first time out, listen to me, alright?" She said sternly. Georgina nodded. "Stay close, keep your cloak on at all times, better yet, pull up the hood. Do NOT converse with anyone other than Ginny or I. If it is absolutely necessary, talk like I taught you, with a lady's charm, okay?" Georgina nodded again. "Keep close Georgina, we'd be hung in our midriffs if you were to suddenly absquatulate."
"Absquatulate?" Georgina asked dumbly.
"To disappear, darling. Do you see why 'tis important to not speak? Lack of knowledge is lack of charm." Agatha said, poking her on the nose. She then brushed passed them both and sat in the carriage. "Come on children" She beckoned. The two youngsters followed quickly.
The carriage ride was quiet. Georgina's palms started to sweat and her heart was beginning to beat faster as she saw the town finally coming into view. She had never been out of her own compound after the age of 10. Even before that, she was only granted the privilege to leave with her mother and nannys to go to the grand balls that they were invited to. Her eyes widened as she saw some of the townspeople pass by the carriage. A battered old woman and her son looked up at her with sad eyes. Her heart rate picked up increasingly, maybe this wasn't a good idea.
"Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem, Creatorem caeli et terrae-" She muttered a silent prayer to herself, hoping that it would save her from any wrong-doers that were waiting for her in the market.
"What was that?" Ginny asked, when she noticed that Georgina had been saying something all along.
"Oh, 'twas nothing" Georgina mumbled, avoiding eye contact from everyone. A few minutes later, the carriage came to a stop. Agatha said something to the driver before motioning the group out of the carriage. The town was nothing that Georgina had expected. It was hectic and crowded. The smell of the air was rather rancid and reminded her of the time she had fallen ill and vomited all over herself in her sleep a couple of years ago. She was taken aback by the rudeness of the people who just roughly pushed her out of the way to get to where they were needed. Georgina was about to return to the carriage, but it had already driven off. She sighed when she felt a comforting hand on her shoulder that led her into the heart of the market. Ginny held her arm tightly as she tried her best to follow Agatha through the masses of people. Their first stop was to the butcher, to pick up meat for the party that the household was holding for the mistresses birthday.
"Aye!" Agatha snapped, succeeding to get the butchers attention.
"What it be today, miss?" He asked cheekily.
"Give me a rack of ribs, four partridges, and a leg of lamb" She answered.
"Having a party, eh?"
"None of your concern, but if you must know, yes, we are having a party. For the mistress."
"Ahh, I understand, and she be?" He asked, motioning over at Georgina who was looking up at the sky questioningly.
"She's a friend of Ginny's, now will you make haste? I fear the meat is spoiling as we speak!"
"A nice piece of meat she is..." He trailed off.
"Hush up boy before I call your father on you! Where is my meat?!" Agatha nearly screamed.
"Here" The butcher said quickly, handing her the meat that she had ordered. Agatha huffed, throwing her chin in the air and stormed off. Ginny pulled Georgina along behind her, but before she was out sight, her and the butcher exchanged quick glances and smiles.
"The nerve of that boy..." Agatha mumbled, as she pushed the crowds apart.
"Who is it that you speak of so wrongly?" Georgina asked.
"No one to worry your pretty little head with, my dear. Keep close" They stopped at another stand that was adorned with beautiful displays of the freshest fruit and vegetables. Georgina sighed and leaned up against a pole that supported the canopy of the stand. She watched as her shoulder length hair fell forward and her bangs covered her eyes. Her attention was quickly diverted to a shiny red apple that stood proudly on top of a high pile of inferior apples. She picked it up and studied every inch of the apples glossy surface.
"Eve's poisoned apple" Someone mumbled rather close to her ear, causing her to jump and nearly drop the apple. She whipped around and came face to face with the butcher. She gasped and turned around again, trying to ignore his rather close presence. "Something so beautiful that was willed by god to let be" he continued, "But man had fallen into the temptation to...touch" He whispered, running the pads of his fingers up and down her arm. The hairs on her arms and neck stood on end and she took in a short breath. She turned around again, but managed to keep her face rather hidden by her long, curly locks.
"William" He said, extending his arm out for Georgina to shake. She did so, but pulled away quickly. There was an awkward silence for a while. "And your name would be...?" William said, breaking the silence.
"Georgina" She said almost inaudibly. She gasped at how grovely that had came out and remembered what Agatha had told her.
"What was that?" He asked again.
"Georg-"
"What are you doing here?" Agatha asked rather rudely, cutting off Georgina.
"Why, I was just getting to know young...what was your name again?"
"Georg-"
"Hush up girl, what did I tell you before!" Agatha reprimanded, grabbing her arm and yanking her closer to her.
"Yes, well, as I was saying, I was just getting to know young George here."
"-ina" Georgina corrected. This earned her a sharp tug on the arm that almost ripped her arm out of her socket.
"Get along now, we have no need for you to just stand here and solicitate." William shrugged before getting up from his original spot against the pole that Georgina was once leaning against. He walked by them without putting a fight, slyly running a hand across Georgina's bottom without Agatha noticing.
"Bye Georgina," He whispered right before he disappeared into the crowd. Georgina's cheeks flushed a deep red.
"I knew this was a bad idea from the start!" Agatha ranted on the ride back to the estate.
"I think it went rather well for her first time," Ginny said happily. Georgina just sat in the corner and watched the town disappear into the size of a shilling out the window. The wind was causing her hair to fly out in all directions, tossing it into a complete mess.
"Georgina, fix your hair, looking sloppy is not appreciated" Agatha snapped, looking rather frustrated. Georgina pulled the top of her hair back into a ponytail and let the rest fall gently at the sides of her neck. Agatha nodded approvingly before continuing. "and I expect you to be helping out in the kitchen this evening, the chefs can't possibly cook all this food by themselves in such a small amount of time. A true Paxton lady knows how to prepare meals along with eat them properly"
"Will I be in my room during the party?" Georgina asked sadly.
"More than likely, but it depends on what the misses says"
"Joy" She muttered, as she shifted her gaze back out the window.
