Okay...heres a reply...that goes with what you said but with a little more umm...information LOL...and I'm with Jennifer on this that I'm not trying to offend any Catholics, or their beliefs...I'm just stating my opinion...and knowledge in hopes of spreading the Good News!! :)
First off...Catholics base their belief of mortal and venial sins on the fact that some things we do (sins) are worse than others...This is true...Killing someone is a lot worse than say stealing a pack of gum like you (Jenn) said...even the Bible says that some sins are worse than others ("There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him...." Proverbs 6: 16-19)Though the Lord distinguishes between different sins, NEVER in Scripture does it say that SOME sin leads to spiritual death...in fact it states that ALL sin leads to death ("For the wages of sin is death..." Romans 6:23 also Romans 7:13)...and thats what I have to say about that...that there is NO biblical basis...Jesus did not teach a difference...He taught that all sin...whether REALLY bad or just semi-bad..results in death!
