Grr!!! I'm angry right now with Catholic Theology! I hate it! Ok before I start ranting, I'm not trying to offend any of you Catholics, but if you're super sensitive about this, don't read it. And feel free to argue with me.
Ok. First off. Mortal and venial sins. A.) Where is that in the Bible? Anywhere? Anywhere? No. There is no Scriptural background for different levels of sin. A sin is a sin is a sin. The Bible clearly says that all sin results in death. Not SOME sin. ALL sin. It doesn't say: "Well...you stole a pack of gum... that's ok. But if you steal a diamond ring, you're goin to Hell." No. Stealing is stealing. Sin is sin. There's nothing that defines different types of sin. Oh wait...Catholics.
2nd...Confession...why should I have to go tell a Priest every bad thing I've done just so God will forgive me? I can talk to God myself. There's no need to have someone else talk to Him for me, and then give me a "punishment" for all the sins I've committed. Why can God only talk through the Priest? Why can't God speak to me in other ways? There's no need in my point of view to sit in a wooden box and talk to a Priest through a screen just so I can feel better. My sins are private. As in not to be shared with anyone else.
3rd...Purgatory...again...where's the Scriptural basis? There are like two verses that Catholics say supposedly "talk about Purgatory". I have looked at these myself, and NOWHERE does it say anything about Purgatory. There's Heaven and there's Hell. Where does Purgatory come in? Sister Therese even said herself that our perception of Purgatory has been changed throughout the years to "make us feel better about it". That's great. Let's just feel good about everything in life. So people aren't scared of going to Hell. We'll just be happy-go-lucky cuz...well it doesn't matter...I haven't killed anyone...I'm not bad enough for Hell. I'll just wait awhile in Purgatory. Um...excuse me? No.
And the last thing for now...cuz I can't think of anything else right now...Ok. So I was doin my Theology homework last night. (Wow, right?) And one of the questions was like "Blah blah...explain the difference between a mortal sin and a venial sin." So I did. (Mortal sin...breaks relationship with God, must be confessed (in CONFESSION); venial sin, lesser sin, doesn't really have to be confessed) So I was scanning for examples of this, and one of the examples just HAPPENED to be (and I quote) "for example [a person] commits adultery while deprived of full reason by alcohol". THIS is considered a lesser, VENIAL sin, because the person was DRUNK. So it's a MORTAL sin to commit adultery...unless of course, you're drunk. Makes PERFECT sense. I am, however, willing to be proved wrong by somebody that says this is OK. Really. Find it, somewhere, ANYWHERE in the Bible where it says this is less of a sin because you were "deprived of full reason because of alcohol", and I will take it all back. Look for a million years, in every single translation, and a million years from now, you're still gonna be looking. You can read the Bible left, right, sideways, upside down, whatever, you're never gonna find those words in there. But that's great. To me that just sounds like a sorry excuse. "Oh...um...honey, I went to a bar last night and cheated on you with a chick there, but...it's OK! Cuz I'm Catholic and it really doesn't count as much cuz I was drunk!" GAH!!! I just..want to know where this LOGIC comes from! It's just like...they've altered everything that's wrong to make it less wrong or even right to some degree, just so we can feel better about the bad things we've done. I swear.
So like I said...sorry to offend any Catholic here, but I do have the right to my opinion, and if somebody would sit down and just explain to me how all these things really are of God, and really are right, I will be MORE than happy to listen.
