Oh yeah. I went to CA yesterday. I went to have dinner with Tania, but I ended up stopping by Steve and David's offices to say hi, and I ran into a bunch of people that I like, among them Khalif, Kiefer, Anna, Makeba, Lucas, Jack, Nora, Cathy, etc. I enjoyed brief conversations with said people and others. Most faculty engaged me in conversation, or at least feigned interest. Some people acted as if I wasn't there. Or they just stared. That was weird, but expected, I guess. I'm really glad that I came late in the day, after most day students had left and when many people were in sports practice--I felt overwhelmed even without all those extra people. Anyway, people were generally nice and complementary. This led me to believe that Concord wasn't as bad as I had made it out to be. Then, while engaged in relatively stimulating conversation with Ernest, Garret, and others, I felt someone brush against my arm in her hurry to get through the ASL lobby.
"Hit me again, Ajie, and I'll get you kicked out of Barnard."
Thank you, Jamie Morris-Clement, for beginning to remind me how much I hated Concord and how glad I am to be gone. I worked with this woman all year long in the dorm, and while I will concede that we didn't have the greatest relationship, it wasn't a particularly terrible one, either. What a fucking bitch. I guess I don't merit a "Hello, how are you?" What she said didn't even make sense. If it was meant as a joke, it was poorly-timed. When she came back again, she made another snide comment and barely looked at me.
Then, over dinner at Brigham's (ahem, Helen's), Anna and Tania caught me up on what has been going on at the Academy. Tightened smoking rules. More DCs. Tania almost got DCed for missing three gospel rehearsals. Jeff Dejar-whatever sat near us during dinner, and Anna had to remind me to lower my voice when I talked about purchasing cigarettes. At the end of dinner, Anna had to run back to Haines in order to hand in her blue-slip on time. Seven-thirty: that same old bell rang, and everyone rushed off to proctored study hall.
When I spoke with Steve Cambria he said, "So college... now that you're there, you really realize how ridiculous this place is, right?"
