Phone Call No One Wants

Karl: Hey love. Can you [run errand I was supposed to run]?
Me: Um, Sure. Why didn't you do it?
K: Well, there was a little fire at the house, and I was helping my dad put it
out and clear out the smoke.
M: What?!
K: Oh, and Raven got out of one of the open windows. He's back inside now, but I
haven't seen Jorj since the smoke alarms started going off.
M: What?!!
K: I'm pretty sure he's in the house. I just can't be totally sure. But don't
worry. We've got things under control.
M: Um. Well, he's probably in his hiding spot under the tub.
K: No. I don't think that's it. I don't think he'd be able to breath under
there. There was a lot of smoke, and I'm sure it came up through the floor in
the bathroom.
M: Honey, I don't want to be having this conversation any more. Please stop
talking now.

So my father in law is replacing our breaker box and up grading our electrical service so we can run the hot tub that was delivered on Monday. He wasn't aware that one of the two circuits he still had connected (so he'd have light and power for tools) had a dehumidifier on it. In the summer the dehumidifier runs pretty constantly, but in the winter it only turns on once in a while. He was using our water pipes as the ground for the circuits, and when the humidifier kicked in, the strong motor in it pulled so much current that the pipe heated up. All the way across the basement to my water main. It got so hot that it melted through the plastic garbage pail filled with dryer lint and dryer sheets which sits right next to the main, and then started it smoldering. Then there was some burning. All in all it wasn't that big a deal. People were home to catch it, so it got stopped before it started the fire wood, stacked right next to it, on fire. It also didn't start any of the piles of clothes around there on fire. Very very lucky. It just filled my house with stench and littered the floor with drips of molten plastic as my father in law carried the still smoldering garbage can, now drenched with fire extinguisher contents, outside to my patio.

I dream of the day we have a simple non traumatic home improvement project.
*sigh*
