We had tryouts for our new season today. I was one of about 10 non team captains who were allowed to attend. It was interesting watching all the new girls going through the drills and knowing that about 20 of them would make it onto the league.

That is a lot of new girls we're taking on. 20 is a whole new team. We lost a LOT of girls this season. I don't know if it's the time commitments overwhelming people, or just the wear and tear caching up with them. What makes things even weirder for next season is that my team is only taking on one new skater in this draft. We were season champs last year, and we'll be basically the same team but with two of our stronger players back from maternity leave. The rest of the teams will be about 1/3 new skaters. I worry a little about what this ever larger power gap will do for the league. It's no fun for the audience if one team dominates every bout.

On the other hand I'm really proud of my team for our unity and skater retention. It's a testament to how well we got along this year. Other teams lost people in part because of infighting , drama, and politics within the teams. While other teams were imploding, we focused on working hard and having fun. Funny how that actually works. Guess that's why it's a cliche. And it made for a really great year. I'm hoping we can repeat that this season. Even if we don't win the championship again, if we have half as much fun it will be a fantastic year.
