"Hispanic or Latino origin is independent of race and is termed "ethnicity" by the United States Census Bureau. The racial categories are:
American Indian and Alaska Native
White or Caucasian
Black or African American
Asian
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander
Some other race, and
Two or more races.
The distinction made by government agencies for those within the population of each race category is between those of Hispanic or Latino origin, and all others of Non-Hispanic or Latino origin.
The majority of Hispanic and Latino Americans are white!" -wiki
I've been meaning to blog about this for a while because I need to get this off of my chest. Working in statistics this is something that pisses me off everytime we do a new project because it is absurd and something that will probably never change. Being Hispanic is an ethnicity, but not a race. When I ask people their race and they say Hispanic or Mexican, I have to tell them "no its not" and say "are you white, black, asian, etc.?" to which they say "none, I'm Hispanic." I have yet to find a Hispanic person who is willing to say they are white or black. Even more annoying, after I ask all others their race, I have to additionaly ask if they are hispanic or non-hispanic to which they say "I just told you, I'm black, I ain't mexican" or "I'm Asian, so..." as if I am dumb. When will the government recognize Hispanic as a race? or even more annoying, will they ever include middle eastern races as a category? Probably never. What Chaldean would ever admit that they are white? please!
"Polls and surveys there commonly break groups down into "White, Non-Hispanic" and "Hispanic." I've always assumed that these categories referred to the fact that "Hispanic" is a cultural description, not a racial or ethnic one. For example, I've known black Cubans, white Cubans and Asian Cubans---similarly I’ve known Jewish Cubans and Presbyterian Cubans. All defy the stereotype of Cubans being any one thing. Just like Americans!" -Cabrera
It's all so backward and no one can agree.
I have to disclaimer: I don't believe in categorizing people by race and only find it acceptable because it is health research and different races of people are subject to different types and prevalancies? of health issues. So lay off!
I also hope the term "African American" dies out at some point during my life time, actually, I hope much sooner than that.
