wentworth almost blew up today!
well this has been a crazy day. i basically literally ran all day from the moment i got to work till about 2pm. we had an event this morning on the other side of campus, so i was running to get it set up and ready to be delivered and was about to leave to deliver it when one of the physical plant guys came up to me and said they needed water set up for all the firemen and policemen. so, i was like, why the hell are firemen and policemen here? and he told me that a huge gas main broke while they were doing construction in the parking lot. apparently, nstar didn't do their job by burying the gas main a certain distance below the ground, and so when they were digging in the area where the gas main was, it was too close to the surface and when they ran over it with one of their trucks, the top of it snapped off, releasing tons of flammable gas into the air.
so, they immediately began evacuating the buildings closest to the parking lot. tons of police, firemen and reporters were around. and they evacuated everyone into the building where my dining hall is. so of course we get bombarded with customers and now my delivery is running late. i finally get to deliver the food and i'm on my way back to the kitchen to start setting up the lunch event i had in 2 hours. on the way back i see like all of wentworth out on the quad, so i went to see what was up. apparently, they decided to close the campus for the rest of the day. so immediately i get excited because that means my lunch event will be cancelled, the dining hall will be closed, and i will get to go home. no such luck. they decided to basically cancel and close everything except the event that i was working on and the dining hall. then i decide i should probably start setting up the event since it was going to start in an hour and a half.
i go to the room where the event is supposed to take place and literally every wentworth faculty and staff member is in there. so i ask someone what is going on. apparently they were told to go their after they evacuated their buildings. so i start telling people to get the hell out so i can set up this event (if you read my previous entry, we are getting kicked out at the end of this month anyway, so i no longer care if i am rude to these people since my job is no longer in jeopardy from them anymore) so the president comes in and tells everyone to go home since they are closing the campus. at this point in time, we get two last minute catering orders for lunches for the people trying to fix the gas leak. so i decide to go deal with the 2 new orders while these people get the hell out of my room.
when i get back to the room, there are still 5 or 6 stragglers sitting down at the tables i need to start setting. i gently remind them that i do need to start setting up the room immediately, and they promise to leave. so i go about getting all the china and everything so we can start setting up. when i come back they are still there. we now have an hour before the event is supposed to start and 65 place settings to set plus the buffet. i remind them again, a little bit more stern this time. they say they are leaving now. i go downstairs to get more stuff, i come back, they are STILL there. now i am pissed. before i lose my temper and really go nuts on these people, i decide to go into the kitchen and take a few breaths. then i see my boss and tell him about it and he goes in there and gets them to finally leave. i dunno why they would stay in the first place, they were told they could go home. i would have been starting my car before he even finished his sentence if it was me.
