It's starting to feel like time to go home. I'm still loving it here, but it's just starting to feel that way.
Been getting lots hotter here. Sweating a ton. No suprise.
Started working out. Even went running one morning. Man, you would not believe how many people are out and about at 6:30 in the morning. Ghanaians wake up super early. I guess I need to go running at 5:30 then. It was weird cuz everyone was starting at us (there were three of us Oburonis so I guess it was kinda a spectable, especially since not many people run here). Also, the dust from tro-tros trying to hit us was ridiculous. *sigh* My ankles bled and I didn't even notice, so I'm giving them a little break before starting up again.
Tonight is a dance performance of The Prodigal Son. I'm super excited for it! Last week I went to a play about Yaa Asantewa, the queen mother of the Asante (Ashanti) people at the time of early British colonization. She was the one who led the rebellion, which held its ground for a long time but ultimately failed. She was sent to Seychelles where she stayed for 23 years before passing away. The production was amazing. One of the best college performances I have ever seen. It used story telling, traditional dress, dancing, music, living drumming, stunts, fire, history and purpose. It even had audience interaction kind of. The storyteller asked how Yaa Asantewa was fighting and the 'children' replies, "Okwesi Buroni!" (Oburoni). The storyteller, who by the way was incredible, then chided them for taking history out of context by saying, "Look around the room. There are always Oburonis present." This was true, as there were several of us in the audience, including planted members of the cast that were then dragged on the stage and "asked" to help them perform the story. They were then scooted to the back where they changed into their clothes. It was funny, sad, and powerful. A lot of it was in Twi, including a humorous translation scene which I did not understand, but it served its purpose very well and was not just for culture's-sake. All in all, I wish more productions were like this. Oh, and did I mention how awesome the dancing was? It was awesome. AWESOME.
I need vegetables. Hmmm... Speaking of food, there has been an inflation in ankaa (orange) prices. Shame. They used to be 500 cedis and now they are 700. That's like 2 pennies more! What is this anyway? Haha... though I realize how silly it is for us to be upset about it, EVERYONE is. I think they're either going out of season or there was a bad crop. It's funny though to see everyone discussing where you can still find ankaa for 500 cedis.
Picked my schedule for next quarter at Northwestern! It's sooo cool. I'm taking Asian American History, Intro to Number Theory, Jazz Theory, Painting, Swahili and Dance Composition. It's actually an overload, so I'll see if they let me do it. I may drop Painting and do it another quarter when I'm not so busy, and actually have the time to paint. But for now, it's staying on there.
Missing everyone back at home dearly.
