Worst scam I've seen in a while

Nov 20, 2008 11:17

I clicked on a link in a Google search a few minutes ago, and got redirected to this site "antivirusdefense.com" which minimized my browser to the size of a stamp (which I thought I had disabled, but maybe I need to reinstall that extension) and threw up a dialog warning me that I might have spyware on my computer, and that I should run "Antivirus 2009" RIGHT NAO:

It didn't matter whether I clicked "OK" or "Cancel"--it did the exact same thing either way, which was to re-expand my browser and start searching DLLs on my C: and D: drive using its magical JavaScript file system utilities:

OH NOES IT FOUND VIRII!!!

No matter what you click here it does the same thing. If you click "Ignore" or the fake close button a dialog pops up warning you that you really ought to install their virus cleaning software, and even if you click 'Cancel' on the dialog it tries to send it to you anyways:

The filename is "A9installertest_880147.exe". Somehow I don't think it has anything to do with Amazon's A9. But holy crap, how bad is that? Has anyone else encountered this site? When I have more time after work I'm gonna look into it more. They really need to have their pants sued off of them for fraud and false advertising. Somehow that seems unlikely though...

malware, linux, virus, scam, evil, wtf
