*_Public Safety Alert_*
On the evening of Friday, December 16, at 11:10 p.m.,
approximately 10 minutes after completion of the NCAA Division 1
Championship Football game, more than 1,800 students began surging into
the plaza of Southwest. UMPD officials operating under standard
procedure issued a dispersal order to ensure the safety of all involved.
Unfortunately, many students were focused on committing destruction of
university property, and committing bodily harm to University, Amherst,
and State Police. A riot ensued, resulting in the arrest of 11 people,
including 10 students, and substantial property damage. Over one hundred
windows were broken in the Southwest area. Although this figure is yet
to be determined, the cost is expected to be quite high. Alcohol and
substance abuse played a significant role in these events.
During the disturbance, many projectiles, including rocks, bottles, full
beer cans, trash cans and other objects were intentionally thrown at the
police. These assaults resulted in two officers being injured at the
scene and many more now reporting substantial bruising. In addition, a
projectile identified to be a one gallon container of a liquid, believed
to be water, was dropped from an upper floor of JQA on the west side of
the quad. This container landed within a few feet of the Chief of
Police. Had this container hit its target severe injury and possibly
death would be the expected outcome.
