Urgh...I got back both my midterms from before the break today.
I was rather disappointed on the OS midterm. I was expecting to get nearly perfect, but his grading was surprisingly harsh, and I ended up with a 77 (note that this is out of 90, so it's not nearly as bad as it sounds). Also, there was a huge point spread, so that's still in the A range.
As for the CS401 midterm...yeah. In the words of Yariv, our TA, "it was a catastrophe." Not just for me, but for the whole class. I got a 50 (this time out of 100). The good news, is that the mean for the class was 50. While it's disappointing to not do above average as per my usual M.O., at least I wasn't below average :P The other good news is that he'll be giving a second midterm, so this one won't count for as much. Also, one thing that saved my butt, was that I was one only two people who got full points on one of the hardedst problems on the test. I *knew* it would be worth it to memorize the proof of the Myhill-Nerode Theorem. However, I sucked at the Kleene-Myhill Theorem--if I had spent more time on that I probably would have gotten at least another 15 points. Finally, there was one problem that I got zero credit on, along with the message "how does this address the problem at hand?" But many people complained about that one and the prof later realized that it was a rather open-ended question, so maybe he won't count it for as much. I dunno about that though...
