Deus ex Machina (a Supernatural drabble)

"Deus ex machina."

Sam turned in time to see his brother shoot the creature, forcing it to retreat. "What?" he asked. This seemed a run of the mill hunt: evil creature, the
two of them fighting it together, neither of them brought the right weapon. Same old thing. A refreshing change from the seals, and trying to hunt down Lucifer.

He watched Dean reload, and ducked so he could fire over his head. Back attacks never worked when they were together. Didn't the bad guys know that by now? "Deus ex machina. Ten bucks." Dean continued as if nothing was wrong.

"Dude, I'm not going to make a bet with you on a mere chance." Sam frowned, turning sharply to slash at the creature with a machete. So far it seemed they were just pissing it off.

His brother grinned. "Just because I took fifty off you the last time we made a bet doesn't mean you have to be a sore loser-" he didn't get the gun up in time, and went down under a flurry of fur and muscle. Sam ran forward to try and get the creature off of him, but before he made it there was a blinding flash of light, and then the creature was just gone. A man stood in its place standing over Dean, holding out his hand to help him up.

Sam stared at Castiel, then frowned harder at Dean. "It doesn't count if you deliberately use yourself as bait."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Dean defended, clapping the confused angel on the shoulder. "Thanks Cas!"

Sam gave him a look, and moved to pick up their supplies. "This is why I won't bet with you."
