So, proposition 8. One of the hottest propositions to the touch right now in California, seeing as it would revoke the Supreme Court's decision on legitimizing same sex marriage in this state.
While I've never really cared whether or not same sex marriage becomes legalized, I voted no. On the top of my list of reasons is that I don't want to be responsible for stealing away a form of happiness that these people just gained. It's not that I'm a proponent for changing the definition of marriage, but I really don't like the opposition's stance against this whole thing. If you want to vote for it on the basis that the courts should stay out of the state's affairs, that's perfectly acceptable. If you want to state that same sex married couples shouldn't get some of the same tax breaks, then whatever, though I believe that to be wrong seeing as every human being has the capacity of working hard and be deserving of said tax breaks despite orientation.
I DO have a problem with the morality issue. Both of my parents are voting for the proposition and my mother is even doing volunteer work to man phones in order to persuade others to vote yes. Things have never felt so awkward. I've done lots of reading, lots of listening, and even checked out an entire article written by their own church. Apparently, it's not anything like "Gays are evil and we should stop them" nowadays; no, that would be too simple and blunt. Instead, the politically correct form of avoiding their real intentions and wearing a welcoming halo is to state that they're trying to save us all from a "tragic lifestyle"; a lifestyle called as such due to one-sided stats on STDs in the gay community. Never mind the higher percentage of diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and failed marriages in your everyday happy home, because gays obviously have it bad since our death percentages are so high in a minority that consists of 5% of the American population. Oh, and our lifespans are allegedly shorter, too.
As you can tell, I'm automatically doomed to get a flesh eating disease and die young. It's a preordained tragic lifestyle, you know.
When will they realize that it's not a matter of orientation, but the lack of responsibility in your everyday citizen? Why don't we cut this archaic bullshit already and start preaching to the mass about common sense and how to correctly manage whatever your lifestyle happens to be? Again, I'm voting against the proposition not for the fact that I want marriage redefined (the hardcore proponents are more obsessed with the idea of being married than having rights), but because I don't want to rip away other people's happiness. That, and I'm not so afraid of social change that I'd crawl into a dark corner and bitch about everything going to hell.
Doesn't make things easier between my parents and I, though...
