Greek Mythology Casting Part 1

Jan 10, 2011 16:45

Once at the top of the business world, a tycoon with many different companies, Zeus was known for his vicious and aggressive style, his empire in the stock market was ‘Jupiter Stocks’ and he even owned his own airline, ‘Olympus Skies Flights’ however the stock market crashed and the economy fell leaving Zeus with practically nothing causing him to radically change his lifestyle, gone was the boardroom and business lunches and power suits and mansions and fancy cars and most of his money instead he is one step away from a trailer, now living in an extremely small house I the middle of suburbia, Zeus has enough money for day to day but is looking for a job, he has put money away for Artemis and Apollo to be able to continue college but realizes that it doesn’t make him a good father, he realizes all the mistakes he’s made in his life and the wrong choices, so sets out to change his relationships, particularly those with women and his children.

Zeus is the ex-husband of Leto (who is currently in a medical facility), he is currently married to Hera, the father of Artemis and Apollo (from Leto) and has two (known) illegitimate children, Jason and Hermes, considered to be the adopted brother of Poseidon, Hades, Athena and Aphrodite.

Peter Herman seems like he could pull off the right kind of Zeus, he could fit in as ‘board room business tycoon’ Zeus but also the ‘down on his luck/I’ve made a mess of my life’ Zeus who tries for redemption and a second chance, also there’s something about his eyes that makes me kind of think ‘yeah this could work’ and I have no idea why lol.

Demeter

Goddess Of The Harvest
Paget Brewster

She's not a hippie earth mother type but she is strong and mothering and nurturing like she should be, Demeter has built her whole life around being a mother to Persephone and on the side owns her own business, a florist/landscaping business (you've got to go with what you're good at right?) a single mother and soul owner of her own business, basically Superwoman but that doesn't mean she's not seconds away from a breakdown and that breakdown comes when her daughter, her world, runs away to Vegas and marries the bane of Demeter's existence, a man twice the human age of her daughter, the god of death who does more than live up to his name, Hades. Demeter considered being Persephone's mother her calling in each and every life she was going to live however she always had a terrible feeling something was going to happen and take Persephone away from her so she did everything she could to prevent that leading to her becoming overbearing and overprotective and her daughter grew up very naive to the world and the people in it resulting in terrible consequences for all around when Demeter is forced to accept the marriage in order to keep any relationship with her daughter.
Demeter and Zeus were lovers in the past and clearly still have feelings for each other, despite an abrupt break up (Demeter to Zeus) the two have remained close and consider themselves best friends. Demeter has been a part of the family for as long as anyone can remember, longer than Athena and Aphrodite though she is not passed off as and 'sibling' Rhea did offer and although Demeter loves the family she declined and most feel it's because of her feelings for Zeus.
Paget Brewster is amazing and may quite possibly be a god herself, I honestly believe that she has the emotional range to portray the character of Demeter the way I envision it, I’ve always felt Demeter was very two dimensional in the myths and reduced to nothing more than a vengeful mother-in-law, which she was yes but I have the feeling she could be so much more, my Demeter is a very complicated character than sacrifices for all the others to the point she forgets herself but she starts to regain control of her life and realise she is a person away from being Persephone’s mother and Paget Brewster could ring everything to the table, hell she could build the table for Demeter’s character. She is just an amazing actress so she is one of the few non-changeables of this cast.

Leto

(Titan Goddess)
The Hidden One
Elizabeth Mitchell

Leto, now i know she never plays much of a role in the mythology but i've always been intrigued by her.

Originally Leto was a nothing character, the bitter ex-wife type, a disinterested mother to Artemis and Apollo, before that Hera was the ex-wife and mother of the twins but she and Zeus never had any children (as far as I know) and I thought that was rather funny since I thought it was once mentioned the Hera was the god of child birth) anyway I thought back to Leto and did some research, just a google search really and I discovered/remembered the story about Leto being cursed (by Hera, not a shining moment for her) to not be able to give birth if she was attached to land so she found an island and gave birth then she sort of disappeared so I was going to have her as the emotionally distant mother but then I thought I needed something more and I got the idea of having her in hospital and that evolved to her having been driven mad by the hellhounds and her ‘madness’ actually being the truth but regular people consider it crazy, (the woman thinks she’s an ancient figure from Gree Mythology, she’s gotta be off her rocker) so she was driven mad by the hellhounds and drifts in and out of ‘consciousness’ from remembering her human life (from centuries ago, I’m thinking sort of a pilgrim/wild west type of life for some reason) to her god-life to a self-aware person who understands what’s going on with her and why she’s in the home. Leto is later cured of her madness through research from Athena and some magic from Hecate however Leto still feels disconnected from this life and the people around her, she doesn’t know where she fits and belongs so she travels the world to find her place but never settles down (this I feel is a modern representation of the myth of Leto not being able to step foot somewhere connected to the earth). Also despite both having been in love with Zeus Leto and Demeter are best friends and understand each other despite neither of them being able to really connect of the last few years considering Leto’s decent into madness.

I love Elizabeth Mitchell, she is an amazing actress and I really think she can pull this off, from what I’ve seen of her work (which isn’t that much but I’m planning on fixing that soon) she seems to play centred and stable women (or at least women with the potential to be those things) who try to settle down well what if she couldn’t settle down and put down roots?.

Poseidon

God Of The Seas
Simon Baker

The god of the seas is actually pretty mellow, currently lives in a beach shack on a small island off the coast, he teaches surfing on Saturdays, he is the typical ‘beach bum/surfer boy’ despite appearing middle aged while being literally an ancient, Poseidon has been chronically their lives since the earliest times and has even been an Olympic gold medal winner in the past, he is building himself a sailboat from hand as a hobby and tries not to get involved in the family drama, he has had feelings for Demeter in the past but knows despite everything it’s Zeus she loves, she comes to him for advice, Posidon is a player and doesn’t mind it until he finds himself falling for the one woman he got off on the wrong foot with, despite being an environmentalist Poseidon owns a cruise ship that is involved in a scandal when it spills oil, he only realises it was his (considering he gave it to Zeus who sold it to pay off some debts) when people harass him about destroying the ocean. Poseidon gets along with his niece Artemis who is also an environmentalist, he also gets along with Apollo because he’s the ‘cool’ uncle and is into a lot of new bands that Apollo likes. Poseidon regards Hera as a footnote in their lives because he knows Zeus and Demeter are meant for each other.
I don’t know why but Simon Baker seems like the regular choice for Poseidon though if anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them, but I think Simon Baker could pull off the laid back ‘we literally have all the time we need’ lifestyle I think Poseidon would have. I’ve just never really ‘clicked’ with Poseidon so he doesn’t really play a big role in this story, he sort of comes and goes in my mind.
