IQ246: Detective Wannabe
Last week a colleague recommended IQ246 ~ Karei naru Jikenbo~ to me. When I checked the cast, whoa, there's Oda Yuuji and Dean Fujioka!
Tempted by the cast, I decided to watch it.
IQ246 ~ Karei naru Jikenbo~ isn't your regular detective story. The main character is a detective wannabe, Houmonji Sharaku, a rich man from distinguished family who possesses IQ of 246. According to his loyal butler, Kensei, Sharaku holds patents for 2.018 inventions and have written 3,625 books.
For generations the Houmonji family is well-known for their intelligence. All of the eldest sons before Sharaku were all interested in crime investigation.
Living a boring life has become the source of Sharaku's stress. "I'm so bored, I'm so bored, I'm so bored. Isn't there any case that worths my time?" he repeated the rhetoric on daily basis.
Whenever there's a case, Sharaku immediately involves himself. He solves cases to kill time. His selfish movements, supported by Kensei, only give headache to Wato Soko, a young female detective assigned to be his chaperone.
Each episode shows the audience Sharaku's ability to read even the smallest hint to solve the cases. His remarkable deduction leads to his confrontation with Maria T., the mysterious antagonist.
I haven't watched until the end but I get the feeling that Maria T. is Morimoto Tomomi (played by Nakatani Miki).
To be honest, I prefer Itou Hideaki to play Sharaku. He plays Akechi Kogoro in two SP dramas, Kindaichi Kousuke vs Akechi Kogoro (2013) and Kindaichi Kousuke vs Akechi Kogoro Futatabi (2014). Plus, he's good looking.
Oda Yuuji made some weird expressions throughout the series and I didn't find it amusing to see. His excessive facial expressions remind of Jim Carey in The Mask. Scary >___<
I have no objection in Kensei's cast though. Dean Fujioka is the next hottest butler after Mizushima Hiro in Mei-chan no Shitsuji! His elegant appearance and composed attitude are perfect as Kensei who holds the rein of his master quirky behaviour. I can't take my eyes off Kensei.

Five more eps to go and I can't wait to see how awesome Kensei is (again). IQ246 ~ Karei naru Jikenbo~ isn't the best detective series but it is quite entertaining, IMHO. If you've got nothing better to do this weekend, try this series!
