The Traveling Duckie was created as an ambassador for Team GEEK, an American Cancer Society Relay For Life team. Team GEEK is participating in the Norridge/Harwood Heights Relay For Life in Norridge, Illinois on August 12-13, 2011.

The Traveling Duckie was created as a way to reach out to the community at large about cancer. He will travel where people diagnosed with cancer, recovering from cancer treatments, or those helping care for someone affected with cancer may not be able to go. The 2011 Traveling Duckie was designed in the image of Nicholas Courtney's character on Doctor Who, The Brigadier. The Brig - as the 2011 Duckie is known as - was agreed upon after it was learned that Courtney died from cancer on February 22, 2011.

The Brig will travel from companion to companion, seeing as much of the world as he can before returning to Chicago for the Relay For Life on August 12, 2011. He has already toured C2E2 in Chicago, visited New York City, New Jersey, saw the New York Premiere of Doctor Who and is scheduled to head to Florida, Cardiff, London, and beyond.

As The Brig continues on his tour, he has a blue satchel in which trinkets and treasures from his adventures can be deposited. After he comes back for the Relay For Life, The Brig will be auctioned off, along with all his mementos and his travel scrapbook, including photos of the places he has been and the people he has met, such as Ian McNiece and Chris Hardwick.

Along with having fabulous fun times, The Traveling Duckie will also be spreading HOPE; hope that one day The Traveling Duckie can be retired because a cure has been found. Until that day, a Duckie will travel, making people smile while promoting the cause of The American Cancer Society and Team GEEK.

Anyone can shelter The Traveling Duckie. To sign up they need to comment on the sign-up post at The Traveling Duckie's blog, or email Team GEEK at thetravelingduckie@gmail.com. When one becomes a companion for The Brig, they must be willing to take pictures of the duckie, and then email the pictures to his email where they will be posted online, tweeted, and printed for inclusion in the travel scrapbook which will be auctioned off. It is not necessary to add anything to his 'luggage'. Plus, it would be even better if the companion could send a small write-up of what The Traveling Duckie did while with them to be made into tweets and "Mission Reports" on the blog. The current companion is responsible for making sure the The Traveling Duckie is handed off or shipped to the next companion.
