some photos from the gallery 825 reception last saturday:
http://www.owlo.net/?p=306 i wasn't expecting much since the postcard for the show was so poorly designed and ugly, but it turned to be a pretty nice show. it was an older crowd than the nucleus receptions, for sure, but i mostly just hung out with my friends... per usual. i haven't yet mastered the art of mingling, though i did have a short exchange with the director of the gallery. it was fun. someone stepped on and cracked a piece that was installed on the floor. oh, the drama.
i saw deerhoof on monday and almost half their set was from apple o', which was a welcomed surprise as i don't own any of their more recent albums. they ended their encore with panda panda panda, which has always been my favorite song of theirs (mostly for the shout-out to china, of course). it was overall decent, but the avalon might have been too big a stage/venue for them, though. koo's, on the other hand, was a perfect venue when i saw them in 2003.
tuesday, i volunteered at a holiday party for CAPE (coalition of asian pacifics in entertainment) and i'm sure it was packed full of a-list asian american celebrities, which translates roughly to d-list actors, if that (this is sad, but it is the truth). grace has a coworker who is a board member and enlisted me and a couple of our friends to volunteer. i manned the panda express food booth and dished out some fried rice and orange chicken. i was shocked at how quickly the food was being consumed considering how disgusting panda express is and that practically everyone in attendance was asian. they should have known better... but i guess one should never underestimate the power of free food. shame on you guys! ok, i had like two plates of it, myself.
on friday, oh man! i went on this mass bike ride. there's a group in LA called midnight ridazz and it was their 2nd annual all city toy ride. there must have been like 300 cyclists. my friend jane let me borrow a bike (actually i rode her newer bike and she rode her beat up old one, which was completely sweet of her) and we headed over with a couple of her friends at around 10pm. i was completely intimidated at first, seeing how i haven't been on a bike in like 4 years, but my fears were quickly quelled as everyone was super nice and the ride was pretty smooth (we took the train to union station (where everyone met up) and rode into the heart of east los angeles and then we rode all the way back to ktown, where jane lives..). i need to get my hands on a bike and pronto!
this weekend was and this week should be relatively chill. just in time for christmas. i need to clean out my apt and start getting rid of stuff...
