Thoughts on the new anime so far?

I've been posting thoughts on the new anime at my own journal lately, but I figured I'd do it here this time, because I'm curious to hear what everyone else thinks about it so far.

It's episode 6 already this week, and I have to admit that I've completely gotten used to the style of the new anime, even though I don't neccesarily love everything ( Read more... )

Haha, I can understand that. I like the cute when it's done right. Like during the first phase of the first exam, Gon and Killua deciding to race. That was done so well, and I adored it because it was cutesy but it also fit the characters. I think my favorite part was when the two of them simultaneously moved to the right side of the screen without any explanation, and it's only a few seconds later that you see that there was someone sprawled out on the stairs in their way. They're not in the least bit bothered by the people going down around them, and it was so very like them. THAT was brilliant.

Getting swallowed by the frog-in-waiting was the same way. They got caught easily, but they also got out easily, unfazed. It was adorable and very like them.

Madhouse tried to do the same in episode 6 with sliding down the hill, but they went too far with that one. That took Killua's "everything's a game" philosophy and turned it into him being reckless and unalert, which he really never is.

I don't think I'd have any problem with the cuteness at all if they interspersed it with the rest. When Killua was introduced, they gave him his "poisons don't affect me" line. But since then there has been absolutely no indication that he's anything but a bumbling, easily excitable kid with endless energy. Which... is what Gon is. The same can be said for Kurapika. He got his awesome angry!face on the boat and his initial arguments with Leorio, but they cut out his horrified face at being compared to Leorio. If they don't intersperse the various aspects of their personalities, the characters start to feel flat.

Yeah, I noticed that too! They were just evading the bodies of the collapsed applicants like it was nothing! XD;; That was so funny!

About the sliding scene, I have to admit that I paused and rewinded a couple of times thinking, 'did he just DO that!?' But in the end I found it more funny/cute than bothersome, and I'm hoping that these changes in Killua's personality now, will serve the purpose of making the shock bigger when we finally do find out what he really can be like. Hopefully next episode... But if it doesn't, and he just stays like this the entire time... then that would really suck. XP;

Luckily, cutesy is exactly what's necessary for the assassin reveal next episode. The preview's sparklyshoujo!Killua was absolutely perfect for the atmosphere of that scene. The horrible way he talks about his family contrasted with that image will be glorious. But what worries me is, yeah. That along with vs. Netero comes Killua's first definitively terrifying act: killing two guys just for talking about him. And as he is in the series now, I won't be able to take that seriously.
