Dean has forgotten what it's like to be normal, that was taken from him when he was four. When The Yellow Eyed Demon, Azazel, came calling and took his mother from them. That night, his normal little life vanished as fast as his home turned to ashes and dust. It died as the warmth and happiness died in his father's eyes as they sat outside on the Impala. Tee ball seemed like a distant memory already at that point, little league unobtainable.
He forgot how to be a child, having to look after his father when he began drinking. So bad Dean had to dump his bottles, knowing it would upset the older Winchester. He learned fast that too much alcohol was a bad thing. Childhood died when he became caretaker for his younger brother Sam. He tried to fight to hang onto it, sneaking out to play video games, until the day he came back home and something was hurting Sammy. That his father came back in time to save his brother from. It ended when he saw the fear, and disappointment in John Winchester's eyes because he left Sammy alone.
Dean just forgot how to live a life passed that of a hunter, what he was molded and raised into. He didn't get close to people, not after Cassie. He knew people would think him insane. He knew in this line of work you lost more then you ever gained. Too many people he watched lose. Now he was facing another loss, two to be precise.
Ellen and Jo Harvelle. They died helping try to fight Lucifer. There was one thing Dean never forgot. How to mourn the death of someone close to him. He didn't forget how to salt and burn, he had been forced to do it enough. He also didn't forget the feeling, the desire for vengeance.
