"The first time I saw..."
Muse Manifesto
The first time I saw a house on fire, I couldn't get the image out of my head for weeks.
My whole life, I'd been told over and over that that's how mom died. Mom died in a fire, supernaturally caused or not; she died pinned to my nursery ceiling and burning to death. Before I saw that house burning, I could only imagine what it had been like, looked like, felt like. I'd sit there, sometimes, in front of bonfires and campfires or those little fires you light to keep your house warm. Hell, I even used to sit and stare at candles for hours, just wondering, just trying to understand.
I never could.
I can't even remember where we were or how old I was, but I never forgot. I can't remember much about it except that the whole house was in flames, fire trucks parked outside, water spraying as people shouted and a family cried.
I stood there and just watched - watched the chaos, watched the flames go higher and higher, tasted the smoke on my tongue, the ashes that the wind carried to the crowd on my lips. And all I could think was that's how mom died.
And for days, it was all I could see when I closed my eyes.
