"Fragile."
Theatrical Muse

Life's fragile. Human life's probably the most fragile of all - but we don't like to think that. We don't like to admit we're one of the weakest species on earth.

Even so, all life's fragile.

And I always knew it too.

I grew up with listening to how great mom was - how brilliant, how full of life - and how that life had ended in minutes. Those stories stopped, though, and what I do remember of them were from a very long time ago.

Then the reminder of the fragility of life came in the form of bruises and blood; of sitting at the window, arms around my legs, chin on my knees and rocking a little as I waited for the familiar rumble of the Impala's engines.

It came in the form of having the first aid kit already opened and ready for Dean and Dad, and trying to do what he could before he was told by whoever was still conscious to back off or go to bed.

It came in the form of close encounters - of my own bruises, my own blood; the shock of seeing your blood painting your fingers, seeing the fear in Dean and Dad's eyes, feeling the edges of your vision blurring.

Sometimes, the reminder comes from watching someone else - someone we don't know, someone we couldn't save - die or watching someone else mourn.

But people…humans…we fool ourselves. We don't like living with death hanging over our heads. We immerse ourselves in life, pretend like we aren't as fragile as any animal we kill.

And living life like someone normal…you forget how easy it is to die. You forget how easily life can end.

A lot of the time, you're so busy living you forget to appreciate life itself - and the cost of a reminder is just not worth it.
