RotM 1.56 Topic from 21/04/07 - "Who or what brings out your protective instincts?"
Since the age of four Dean has looked after Sam as best he knew how. It wasn’t always the right way and it wasn’t always the proper way but it was his way and he figures that’s good enough.
He isn’t quite sure when he stopped letting people in and stopped letting people care about him but somewhere along the line it happened but everything he cut off in himself he gave tenfold to Sam.
When Sam was hungry, Dean cooked or tried to. When he was hurt, Dean patched him up. When he was scared, Dean comforted him and tried to will the nightmares away. When Sam needed him, Dean was there and he tried to give Sam a life that had everything he could remember from those four years before all of this.
Dean doesn’t care about a lot of people, not in the real sense of the word, but when it comes to Sam and when it comes to his family he’s more impassioned than ever. Sam is blood and at the moment he is all that matters and Dean will kill to keep him alive.
Sam’s family and he’s the last person in the world that’s keeping Dean whole, too many fragments have already broken off and sometimes Dean feels like he’s spiraling. Dad’s death hit him hard, probably harder than anything ever has and Dean still isn’t completely okay with how things went but he made a promise and God help him if he’s going to fail.
Not now and not ever.
Sam has always brought out the best and the worst in Dean, the two extremes clashing together in some of the most violent of ways until Dean’s no longer sure he has a soul. The things he’s willing to do for his brother are frightening and awe inspiring.
There’s one rule in Dean’s world: no one hurts Sammy.
It’s always been that way and it’ll always be that way until death do them part and even then Dean thinks he’d be willing to march into the afterlife and drag Sam out by the skin of his teeth if that’s what it takes.
No one hurts Sammy and God have mercy on their soul if they do.
