"The moral of the story is..."

Spoilers for 2.06 - 'No Exit'. Don't read unless you've seen the episode or just enjoy being spoiled

Is that you never know someone as well as you like to think that you do.

You like to think that you know everything there is to know about them, like to think that nothing they can do is ever going to surprise you and that no matter what; you’re always going to know them.

Truth of the matter is that we’ve all got secrets, all got skeletons in our closets and ghosts in our past. Some real, others not so much; but they’re there all the same and it doesn’t much how much distance or time you put between you and them, they’re always going to be there.

My dad, man of mystery much like myself and Sam but I always thought I knew him better than anyone but then Sam cracks my dad’s voicemail and it turns out there’s this whole other world he never told us about. A place called the Roadhouse, where hunters go and our life is normal; almost close to regular.

There’s this woman, called Ellen and she’s got herself a daughter, Jo.

Just like us, they’d lost the other part that made up their family and I could relate to that, even if they lost theirs years ago. The thing I couldn’t relate to was Jo’s hunger, her desire to be a part of this life because frankly no one chooses this life; not when they’ve got other options, better choices.

The last hunt we had?

We had ourselves a tagalong, seems Jo wasn’t the sort to accept no for an answer. Not sure why the girl has the thirst but she seemed like she was wanting to prove some kind of point, I’m thinking she wanted to show mom that she was all grown up.

Whatever the case, things got a little sketchy and for a while we lost her but we got her back; which I like to think is the important part and hey, might have saved a couple more lives by encasing H.H Holmes in concrete.

Just when I started thinking that maybe we could trust and work with the Roadhouse folk, Jo turns right on around and tells me my father was responsible for her father’s death. Like something my father did somehow decided her father’s fate. Can’t help but think she was looking at me and Sammy and just thinking: Like father like son.

Here’s the thing: I may not have known my father as well as I thought I did, might not have known he had this whole other life where he worked with other hunters but I did know how good he was and what he was capable of.

My father survived countless encounters of the supernatural and I can’t count on any of my fingers or toes just how many lives he saved; so what? One mistake (if it was even that and Jo’s dad just didn’t fuck up) and he’s suddenly the bad guy? We’re human, we all make mistakes but somehow one mistake weighed up against a lifetime of good work seems enough to tarnish a man’s character.

See, I was beginning to think we could trust Ellen, Jo, and Ash. Really beginning to think that maybe we weren’t so alone in this fight but it would seem that we are, just like we were before and I’m starting to think it’s better that way.

No matter what happens or how many conversations you have with a person, you never really know them as well as you like to think you do.
