We spent this afternoon at the bike park trying to encourage Crispin with his bike riding. He managed to have a crisis of confidence  and convinced himself it was too hard dispite several successful outings previously. Cue much parental frustration  and failure to be any sort of constuctive. When so many skills come easily having to actually work at something bewilders him.  We've been trying to keep an eye on the things that have been bugging him at school but have been foiled by relieving teachers (his teacher had release time on my parent help morning and the allegedly mean swimming teacher was sick) but he came home on Friday with a part four journal (as opposed to the part two one he had declared easy and boring) which he say is only a little too easy and seems happy about.

We've booked a long weekend in Auckland from the 13th to 16th of this month. We're staying at The Heritage rather than imposing on any friends-and-relations because we figure that may make it easier to keep over-tired kids to some kind of semblance of their routine. We're mostly going to see the dinosaur at the musuem and assorted touristy stuff. It's the first time any of us have had a trip that didn't involve staying with my parents or going to a conference since 2004 and the only time I've been north of Wellington except for a conference in Hamilton last year so we are inordinately excited. And if I claim it as educational and fill in a form Crispin won't even get marked absent for the days he's not at school.
