It's really fortunate that I am as old as I am.
When I was a kid, I was such an outcast that I didn't even have friends to play role playing games with... I had to pretend to play them by myself. By the time I went to high school, I was old enough to realize that I didn't need or really want to immerse myself in an alternate reality to the extent that I would have had I been given the opportunity. Plus, my high school was small enough that there weren't really complete outcasts... Except maybe the day students, but even they had their own little clique and interacted with the boarding students more than I would have had I gone to a non-boarding high school and been one of the "ultra" geeks I most likely would have been.
Anyway, the point I was getting at is that if the world of online role playing games had existed in my childhood the way that it does today, it is very likely that I would be a completely socially stunted douchebag... OK -- MORE of a socially stunted douchebag... I'd likely be Antowain the Palladin, roaming the wilds of some Neverwinter Nights server in all of my spare time. Living with my mom, instead of having my mom live with me...
Instead, I'm downloading radio broadcasts of old football games... Hmmmm... Maybe it didn't matter one way or another... At least I have developed the skill to get women, occasionaly, to show a complete lack of good sense (or possibly pity/mercy) and have sex with me... And let me make it clear that I stress the 'occasionaly' part of that last statement.
