The local news is breathlessly reporting on the effects of Hurricane Alex, which made landfall an hour ago in northern Mexico. It's causing some rain and some wind and some choppy conditions around the Houston port, and some higher than usual tides and light flooding in some oceanfront areas. Nothing major up here at all, but you wouldn't know from the news coverage. We are several hundred miles north of where the eye made landfall, but they had multiple reporters out for live coverage, and apparently will be covering the storm for the entire late news this evening. Bleah.

This is a symptom of a larger problem in Texas, one of my least favorite things about living here -- if it's happening in Texas, anywhere in Texas, it's affecting "us". The unending git-'er-done-ness of state pride here is just unrelenting. I hate it. Leave me alone and stop being so goddamn Texan all the time. Just be.

Anyway, I myself am breathlessly anticipating my 4th of July vacation, which starts tomorrow after work. Richard and I are packing up and driving up north of Dallas to Lake Texoma, and spending the extra-long weekend at my uncle's lake house. His lake frontage is up on a sandstone bluff, so if you walk down to the lake, there's a nice strip where the bluff has eroded some and created a beach. It's the best of all worlds -- out in the middle of nowhere, so very quiet, plus a fully furnished house (my uncle owns 2 small, 1-bedroom homes across the street from each other, and lives in one full time and keeps the other for guests; he's one of a very few year-round residents at the lake), and a private bit of beach. I can't wait. I just need a break from Houston. This place is getting to me. March can't get here soon enough.
