It’s definitely something I struggle with.
Not only because of my personal experience,
But also because of the looks on their faces.
Family, friends, strangers, it doesn’t make a difference, really.
As soon as the tragedy of rape is mentioned
Everyone fidgets in their personal discomfort.
Yes, some are regrettably reminded of the horror,
But others, they just want to pretend it isn’t real.
Some will question the degree to which a violation was committed,
As if any degree can ever be acceptable.
Oh, I’m sorry, but how violent was your [murder]?
No, it doesn’t depend.
I am trying to find a way to connect with others like me-
Survivors tired of the disregard,
Tired of the silence we’re forced into
A silence created by the social mores that say this sort of thing shouldn’t happen
When in fact, it happens all the time.
