ok! so the answer to the movie quiz was the Werckmeister Harmonies, a 2000 movie directed by hungary's own béla tarr. if you have the patience for obscure films composed of very long shots, i recommend checking it out, because it's so great. especially the opening shot, which is what was screencapped below (by the nice folks at senses of cinema)

Oh man, I can't wait to see that. I read the book it was based on and that was fantastic.

i'm still only 20 pages or so into the book (this is like 3 years later; i'm not even sure where it went to), but i think it's fairly faithful, at least to the mood and tone. krasznahorkai did collaborate on the screenplay.
