I feel like a crusader for liberalism. After a year or so of taking piano lessons from Mrs. Jesse Ash (Abby's grandmother) and having wonderful conversations with her about America's youth and the state of politics and progressivism in this country today, I gave her a cd of Ani Difranco that Anji was kind enough to burn for me. Feeling brave, I also lent her another Ani mix that has some of her political/social message songs in it like Self-Evident, and Armed to the Teeth, etc. I warned her about the language and abrasiveness of some of the songs, but assured her that it was all in the interest of furthering the cause. She said not to worry, that it's all a part of her having new experiences. She also said thank you and that she was looking forward to listening to it all.
Ok, so maybe I'm not a crusader, but I did get one more person to start listening to Ani, someone who would normally never be approached with such music, someone whom people may normally think would not be receptive to such music just because of her age. It makes me so happy to discover such people, they are like little jewels.
And by the way, Anji, she was quite impressed by your organizing the Day of Silence. She says, "You Keystone kids are really going to make a mark on this world. We need that, we need to get away from this idea that the main means and goals are power. Really, the only way to do things is through love."
And....I have a paying gig! A professor from Trinity called today to ask me to read poetry there this coming Tuesday. I am going to read with two other poets at 7pm, and they are going to pay me! How cool is that.
