One of my earliest gaming memories was of Bionic Commando-- my best friend and I would, whenever we thought we could get away with it, steal away to the house at the very end of the road, occupied ususally by a 20-something Army dropout slacker who's freetime was spent mostly playing the NES.
He was, of course, our idol.
Anyway, the type of games he had about-- because, unlike us, he had the class and the smarts to avoid crap games-- was stuff like Zelda, Contra, Metal Gear, and my favorite to ask him to play, Bionic Commando. (-Ask- him to play as he was entirely too cool to let grimy-faced little brats play on his NES)
I'm not going to say Bionic Commando was where I first fell in love with gaming, but it was where I realized gaming could be something more than Finding The Princess, or Shoot The Rain of Aliens, or Chase The Dot-- gaming could be something to care about. Something worthwhile. Something to be proud of.
Something to have a passion about.
And yes, it was cheesy-- what with Hitler's head floating in a tank of brine, but it at the same time taught me that gaming could be something an adult could legitimately take pleasure in.
So I watched this video, and watched it again, and again, my smile growing wider all the while. It's a work of love, made by people who Get It. For years I've been begging for Capcom to remember about Bionic Commando, and was encouraged-- although with a certain trepidation-- when I saw the 3d "reimagining" for the 360 and PS3. But this, yeah-- They knew. They knew they had something special.

Now let's see if they can remember Strider.
